What's so special about

Tipton Green Methodist Church

Come and be part of something special.  At Tipton Green Methodist Church, we are more than just a 'church' - we are a community of people who come together to worship, learn and share in the name of Jesus Christ

If you are planning on visiting us for the first timehere are some helpful hints.

Our Calling

The calling of the Methodist Church is to respond to the gospel of God's love in Christ and to live out our discipleship in worship and mission. We do this through:

Worship - The Church exists to increase awareness of God's presence and to celebrate God's love

Learning and Caring - The Church exists to help people to grow and learn as Christians, through mutual support and care

Service - The Church exists to be a good neighbour to people in need and to challenge injustice

Evangelism - The Church exists to make more followers of Jesus Christ

This underpins everything we do in our churches, in our Circuit and in our everyday lives. We are called to be a growing, inclusive, evangelistic and justice-seeking Church.

We welcome everyone, point people towards God, call people to personal holiness in Christ and we challenge injustice.

Personal Salvation  is important to Methodists and central to our way of thinking (our theology).  Our founder, John Wesley, developed 'The Four Alls' of Methodism;

All must be saved;   All can be saved;   All can know that they are saved;   All can be saved to the uttermost

Rev Denise

Our Minister

Rev Denise Williams

I was born and grew up in Walsall and worked for many years as a health visitor. I continued this as I trained for the ministry part-time at Queens Theological college. When I was stationed, I hopped over a Circuit to join the then Tipton Circuit which became the Tipton and West Bromwich Circuit. This in turn joined with the Circuit I had 'hopped' over which became the Black Country Circuit - so I have worked for 3 Circuits without moving. I became Superintendent Minister in the Circuit I was serving in, the Black Country Circuit, in 2018.

I love the variety that is ministry, enjoying outreach in the community especially working with children, and in taking occasional offices supporting families through both the most joyful and most difficult times of their lives.

Family is very important to me. I am a wife, mother to three grown-up children and last year became Nan to a delightful Grandson born 10 weeks early who keeps us on our toes. I also have a dog.

As Superintendent Minister, I have pastoral oversight for the whole Circuit, but also directly for  Methodist Centre, New Road, St. Andrew's (a Local Ecumenical Partnership with the Anglican Church) and Tipton Green Methodist Churches.

Our Circuit

We are currently a family of 12 actively worshipping Methodist Churches and 1 LEP (local ecumenical partner), serving the communities of Tipton, Wednesbury and West Bromwich.

Geographically, our circuit extends from the borders of Wolverhampton to the outer areas of West Bromwich; one of
our churches is located within walking distance of 'The Hawthorns' - the home of West Bromwich Albion FC.

Rooted in the Black Country

Located in the West Midlands of England, our Circuit forms part of the wider Black Country a region made up of around 20 towns across the four Metropolitan Boroughs of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

The exact boundaries of the Black Country are often debated, but its influence is beyond question. The people of this region helped shape the modern world: they built the world’s first successful steam engine, sent the first locomotive (the Stourbridge Lion) to the United States, pioneered the introduction of a minimum wage, forged the Titanic’s anchor, constructed the Crystal Palace, and even created the arch that now crowns Wembley Stadium.

Rooted in the Black Country

From the early 20th century, the Black Country stood at the heart of Britain’s industrial might. Coal mines, iron foundries, glassworks and brick factories filled the landscape, and goods stamped “Made in the Black Country” travelled across the globe.

This intensity of industry came at a cost. Vast areas of land were transformed for their resources, and the skies were marked by smoke and fire. In 1862, Elihu Burritt — the American Consul in Birmingham described the Black Country as “black by day and red by night”, capturing forever the striking image of smog-filled days and furnace-lit nights.

A little bit of history

Tipton Green Methodist Church was opened in July 1978, formed by the merger of three churches (Park Lane, Bloomfield and Bell Street) - merging into one fellowship. However, there has been a Methodist presence on the current site since 1750 when the first 'preaching house' was built.  This was replaced by a chapel in 1786.

In 1809 Park Lane Methodist Church was built but fell into disrepair by 1975. A blue English Heritage plaque, indicating the site as one where John Wesley himself had preached, is testimony to God’s grace being worked out and lived in our community for over two centuries.  An amazing legacy!

In addition to regular Sunday morning worship (including Junior Church), other activities at Tipton Green include

  •  Rhema Bible Fellowship - offering a varied programme of Biblical studies including a popular Lent course

  •  Guides, Brownies and Rainbows - who meet in the church hall

  •  Junior Fun Club - a weekly get together for young people offering games, crafts and other activities - ending with a short Christian message.

  •  Lunch Club - which meets on the first Wednesday of each month.  This is a community outreach, offering light meals and drinks. It is popular with older people who have the opportunity to meet friends and reduce isolation.

  • 'Heart to Art' - a regular community focused meeting for those who wish to share friendship, in a relaxed atmosphere, with craft-based activities.

As a society of Methodist Christians today, we offer people a warm welcome, free from judgment. We strive to create a space where all can explore who God is and what He has done for us in Jesus.  Worship, fellowship and Biblical truth are fundamental to our discipleship journey.

Within the Tipton area we have good relations with friends in other churches.  New Life Church meet in our premises on Sunday afternoons.  Within our local community, we have strong links with the Tipton Food Bank, which has operated since 2013. People from Tipton Green have been involved from its inception.

Our main aspiration for Tipton Green Church is growth and linking more closely with community and families.  Put simply, our vision is to make Jesus real to people in our vicinity, encouraging meaningful faith, and growing a love-centred fellowship for all ages.  You are welcome to join us and be part of the journey!
